Cupping is a very safe and effective form of traditional Chinese medicine. Using this method, a vacuum is created when the skin is lifted away from the muscle and fascia using a suctioning cup. Cupping breaks up local adhesions, which may improve tissue extensibility, decrease pain, and restore proper movement patterns through a relief in myofascial restrictions. Cupping also aids in dispelling of stagnant blood and lymph, bringing a fresh supply of oxygenated blood to the treatment area.
The cups can be left on a specific treatment area for 5-10 minutes, or they can be dragged along the skin to increase the treatment area and improve tissue mobility. It is not uncommon to develop round bruises where the cups were placed post treatment; however, the vast majority of patients report no pain in bruised areas.
Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective manual therapy technique, that involves applying sustained pressure into the myofascial tissue in areas of restrictions, to eliminate pain and restore motion.
